yay

Yesterday was a really good day, so I figured it was worth an entry:

So, I went to pep band for men's lacrosse, even though I knew I should be doing work, but the weather was awful and the game was cancelled, so I got the time to work and still got points for showing up. Then, I wrote a lot of my program for a class I'm in that I was a bit worried about. All the calculations are working! Just gotta get pictures to work... (this is especially exciting because I never learned the programming language I'm writing in...I'm learning it as I go). So, I am in better standing with my two huge projects than I expected to be at this point :) *update* Both projects are basically done!

THEN at women's bball (more pep band), I got to participate in the halftime promotion. It was bball musical chairs. We had to dribble around the chairs at center court, then when the music stops you have to make a layup, run back, and get a chair. So, it was two 7' guys (seriously...they were really tall), another guy and another girl. The first four rounds, I made the layup and got back first. The last time, we both made the layup at the same time and came running back, but he was there a split second earlier and I bounced off him. He was booed quite a bit (he beat/knocked down the short girl in a pep band shirt who almost won). He felt awful. When I went back up to the pep band after getting some water, he was sitting up there and gave me the prize. This guy was so funny. I felt bad for him. He came back later wanting to save his reputation. The next time out, we were going to go to center court and they were going to announce he gave it to me. ha. But no time out was called. Also, funny sidenote, at the end of the game, when the players line up and shake hands, he hopped in line behind the opposing team and high fived all our players. Not sure if he knows them or not. This guy is crazy. Very entertaining.

Sorry that was so long-winded. I was really excited about it. I made all my layups and was basically awesome. I miss bball...

anyhoo...

Also, Cornell Men's bball won their last Ivy game. Ivy title! Undefeated in the league for the whole season!
Women's bball split the Ivy title with Harvard and Dartmouth!

p.s. I've been songleading services for hillel reform services. It's a lot of fun and they like me (they really like me!). I need to be playing guitar more often though....

I will be really upset if I don't get into March Madness...we find out tomorrow....

oh, and I had to take this for class. I am an idealist: champion. http://www.personalityzone.com/view/temperament/champion.html

scarily accurate

To clarify...

Some people just don't seem to understand my point of view.

When I say 'I love commercialized Christmas", what I mean is I love the feeling of the season. I don't like that the malls and stores are packed and people go around buying gift cards because they don't actually feel like putting thought into a gift.

I like the sense of family and tradition that you get when you're out and about before Christmas. I like the holiday cheer that people have that's shown in the holiday lights and their demeanor and the music. I like getting well-thought-out gifts for people that will make them smile.

I can't be a fan of real Christmas because I don't experience it. At least, I haven't since I was little and my family volunteered at Ronald McDonald House during Christmas. When we did that, I couldn't appreciate the actual holiday 'cause I don't believe in it or know anything about it- but I could appreciate the feeling of the holiday. How it cheers people up. How it makes people forget their problems at least for a little bit.

Listening to Christmas music, driving around and looking at decorations, seeing people smiling and happy...these are what make the Christmas season "merry and bright". This is why I love "commercialized" Christmas, though I suppose that is not the correct term to use.

On a related note: I'm not used to having so many people around me to celebrate Hannukah with. All my friends at home celebrated Christmas, so I'm used to Hannukah not being a big deal. But here, I get to celebrate my holiday with my friends. That's a really cool thing for me. So I'm sorry if our holiday cheer upsets or annoys you, but it cheers me up to have friends to light candles and sing with. Hannukah really isn't an important holiday, so I'm getting what I can out of it: a chance to share something with friends and something to brighten my day a little.

Happy (c)han(n)uk(k)a(h) and seasons greetings.

Hey everybody! I'm at the end of my day off...I actually head back to sort mail in a few minutes, but I thought I'd update you a little.

Day off:
Spent 24 hours with Amy pretty much-
tried to walk to downtown oconomowoc...after 45 minutes of walking, we realized we wouldnt make it with enough time, so we walked back and stopped at kwik trip (gas station store) woot woot. I came back for 'tent night' cause I felt like it. Then we went to the Mo' (staff lounge) and watched Hercules. In the morning, we got cereal and coffee in the chadar ochel (dining hall) and then wandered and such. We borrowed Jeremy's car and went to noodles and company, bed bath and beyond, kohls, and target. Fun times. It really was more fun than it sounds probably.

Camp in general:
camp is great. I'm a little sick right now so that kinda sucks, but whatcha gonna do? My campers like me :) and Tzofim staff is great. Lots has been going on, but I don't have enough time to tell all, so this'll have to do.

Also, once again reconsidering life choices. Do I really want to be an engineer? I don't know. Again, I'm considering teaching, though a different level now...and I still really enjoy psych. But how the hell do you go about switching like that? And what if you switch and it's the wrong choice? Oy...life is so complicated.

Yet, life is good. So glad I came to camp :)

Miss you guys!

But I'm also saying goodbye 'cause I won't be online much at all for the next 9 weeks. If I am, take advantage of it. Also, you should text me :) I'll be able to respond at night.
sorry about that last entry to those of you that saw it. It was a little too emo and I apologize.

I'm just more than a little dissapointed in myself right now. I could and should be doing so much better. Why are my only good grades in something my career has nothing to do with?
I want to say a lot of why I'm not doing well is because I'm not taking classes I'm really interested in...but If I'm not interested in the basic foundations of what I think I'm interested in...am I screwed? I don't know. I guess we'll see.

Also...one of my grades in particular just makes me really angry...I actually understood everything in that class but no. the curve had to kill me.

happy happy happy. let's all be happy. :)

On a happier note...I go to camp in less than a week! I'm excited. It should be fun.

AND

Mallorie and my trip to DC was really fun. We got to see Sarah (of course) which was awesome. We also went to:
the International Spy Museum
Georgetown
the Library of Congress
monuments/memorials
Sarah's lab
Air and Space Museum
Museum of Natural History

and we saw RJC. It was a very eventful few days.

Love you Sarah! So glad I got to see you!

Just had IM softball playoff games. We won the firs 21-5 and lost the second by 8. The second team was really good, but they had one (at least) jerk on their team. It seems that the teams with the assholes usually end up doing well, but certain successes are worth sacrificing for good sportsmanship and good times.

So it's the last week of classes for freshman year...weird. This semester went by really fast. I'm going to miss living on north a bit, but I'm really excited for Dewitt next year. woot woot! It's going to be a lot of interesting and a lot of fun. Not really looking for the walk to class...but I suppose it's worth it.

I'm also excited for camp this summer, but I'm gonna miss school and people from home. It's weird to think that the seniors (for the most part) won't be here next year. I got a lot closer to a lot of people this semester and I will miss the over the summer-but I know, when I come back in August, it is going to be really exciting (yay for first night!) All of you people staying for the summer better not have too much fun without me!

Slope Day. I am so excited.

gopackers822: whatever you're expecting is not even close to how good it will be
gopackers822: it's unfathomable

What an awesome birthday. Woo!

oh no. I forgot we have a floor meeting...ugh. off I go!

Rooms Party:
very awesome. I really enjoyed friday night...people are hilarious, it was cool to see all the rooms finally, and everyone was spread out yet I still got to see lots of people. That was pretty awesome. Since everyone was spread out, but still moving around, I got to see lots of people, but have good conversations with lots too in smaller groups. If you understand that (I know I worded that poorly).

Spring Concert:
went surprisingly well. I had fun and others seem to too. We had lots of people stop and listen. Don't think we recruited anybody...but ithacans seemed to enjoy it.

Trumpet-Sax:
I enjoy the saxes. We had a pretty good turnout. Lots of hanging out, talking. There was also some dancing of course (we know how the saxy ladies like to dance). Fun times were had. RJC was here this weekend so that was exciting too.

I have lots to do event though stressful prelims are over...very decieving...bah.

more grey's quotes...

You know when you were a little kid and you believed in fairy tales? That fantasy of what your life would be – white dress, prince charming who’d carry you away to a castle on a hill. You’d lie in your bed at night and close your eyes and you had complete and utter faith. Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, prince charming –they were so close you could taste them. But eventually you grow up and one day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears. Most people turn to the things and people they can trust. But the thing is, it’s hard to let go of that fairy tale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope and faith that one day they would open their eyes and it would all come true.

At the end of the day, faith is a funny thing. It turns up when you don’t really expect it. It’s like one day you realize that the fairy tale is slightly different than your dream. The castle, well it may not be a castle. And it’s not so important that it’s happily ever after – just that it’s happy right now. See, once in a while, once in a blue moon, people will surprise you. And once in a while, people may even take your breath away.

I've heard that it’s possible to grow up, I've just never met anyone who’s actually done it. Without parents to defy, we break the rules we make for ourselves. We throw tantrums when things don’t go our way. We whisper secrets with our best friend, in the dark. We look for comfort where we can find it. And we hope against all logic, against all experience, like children, we never give up hope.

After careful consideration and many sleepless nights, here’s what I've decided. There's no such thing as a grown-up. We move on, we move out, we move away from our families and form our own. But the basic insecurities, the basic fears and all those old wounds just grow up with us. And just when we think life and circumstances have forced us truly to become an adult, your mother says something like that. Or worse, something like that. We get bigger, we get taller, we get older. But, for the most part, we're still a bunch of kids, running around the playground, trying desperately to fit in.

At the end of the day, when it comes down to it, all we really want is to be close to somebody. So this thing where we all keep our distance and pretend not to care about each other, it's usually a load of bull. So we pick and choose who we want to remain close to, and once we've chosen those people, we tend to stick close by. No matter how much we hurt them. The people that are still with you at the end of the day, those are the ones worth keeping. And sure, sometimes close can be too close. But sometimes, that invasion of personal space, it can be exactly what you need.

Who gets to determine when the old ends and the new begins? It’s not on the calendar, it’s not a birthday, it’s not a new year, it’s an event --big or small, something that changes us, ideally it gives us hope, a new way of living and looking at the world, letting go of old habits, old memories. What's important is that we never stop believing we can have a new beginning, but it's also important to remember amid all the crap are a few things really worth holding on to.

So go ahead... argue with the ref, change the rules, cheat a little, take a break and tend to your wounds. But play. Play. Play hard, play fast... play loose and free. Play as if there's no tomorrow. Okay, so it's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game... right?

Maybe our old wounds teach us something. They remind us where we've been and what we've overcome. They teach us lessons about what to avoid in the future. That's what we like to think. But that's not the way it is, is it? Some things we just have to learn over and over and over again.

"Four hundred years ago, another well-known English guy had an opinion about being alone. John Donne. He thought we were never alone. Of course, it was fancier when he said it. "No man is an island entire unto himself." Boil down that island talk, and he just meant that all anyone needs is someone to step in and let us know we're not alone."
~Grey's Anatomy

what I've done so far over break:
coffee w/Monica
Museum of Science and Industry-saw the Body Worlds 2 exhibit. It was creepy and awesome at the same time. Then we went to Orly's for dinner...what an interesting place. Sarah, if you want to leave a comment further explaining it, please do.
Watched 'For Your Consideration' with my sisters friends
shopping with Sarah (yay new clothes)
visited conant drama
stole a tray
made dinner
...

visiting ISU thursday-saturday

haven't gotten any work done. I fail. oh well.

so tired....

p.s. I love Grey's Anatomy far too much...I can't wait to see this week's....

"Your mom's face's cat is named felix!!!"-Monica

Carolyn made a game out of touching lightposts, parking meters, and people for points.

"Do I get points if I touch them?"
"No, Carolyn. You don't know them."

"How many points do I have?"
"I don't know, but I think you're winning."
"REALLY?!"

We met a trumpet from '89 at hot truck. He seemed pretty cool-and highly amused by Monica.

"Hi I'm Mark"
*Monica stares at her hot truck*
"Are you in pep band?"
*Monica continues to stare at her hot truck*
"What do you play?"
*suddenly is aware of what's goig on around her...kinda* "How do you know us?"
"...I used to be a trumpet. Zach knows, ask him"
"omg-you know people's names? That's *mumbles and runs away*

"Wait you were class of '89?"-Monica
"Yeah"
"I was born a year before that."

I'm sure there were more-feel free to add (Amanda-this means you).
